Many writers worth reading today have found themselves homeless and insecure, never knowing when they’ll accidentally step on the next land mine but always sure they’ll be sacrificed to save the careers of those higher up in the institution. Encouraged by the success of people I admire on here who have turned this political and institutional homelessness into independence, I’ve decided to return to regular writing. For the first time in a few years I’m even looking forward to it. I’ll still be contributing to some of the publications I love, but starting today, I no longer have a boss to get in trouble with or another person’s political project to get carried along by. Of course no observant person now believes that any of us are free in the West, but this is definitely an improvement.
I want to write things that are constructive and helpful for my subscribers, supporters, friends and allies. When I find something illuminating or worthy of appreciation, this is where I’ll share it.
I’m going to write regular book reviews with a particular focus on finding gems among the obscure, overlooked or forgotten. In time, I want to interview lots of people I find interesting, including writers and public figures you may not already know from outside the Anglophone world.
I also want to write a regular series examining the strategies and routes to power of different political figures in history up to the present.
Sometimes I’ll write full essays, sometimes investigative reporting and sometimes it’ll be idle thoughts. I hope also that the focus on politics will be balanced with culture and the focus on the present will be balanced with the past.
