Rocinante - Episode 13

Roger Casement w/ Donal Fallon
7

Friends, I am very excited to bring you our episode this week, on the extraordinary story of Roger Casement, a man who went from the pinnacle of prestige in the Imperial service, when he was knighted by King George V for his humanitarian work in the Congo, to being executed by hanging for treason a few short years later. His story is filled with things that resonate today: idealists becoming disillusioned with the empire, sexual smear campaigns, regional battles being played out abroad, and states employing earnest moral crusaders in their foreign policy, only for the same knight-errant to turn on them.

Dubliner and historian Donal Fallon packed this episode with amazing connections and details to other world historic figures and events. You can find his podcast Three Castles Burning here, and his biography of John MacBride (romantic rival of W.B.Yeats and leader of the Irish Transvaal Brigade) here.

You can find Sean here and the Patreon here and the YouTube here. Share, subscribe, say nice things, tell your friends, etc.

Production by Nick Biddle
